A Successful Yet Underrated Entry

One of the truly magical things about Eurovision is the fact that we get to see different perspectives of a song and differing opinions and rankings with the variety of songs we receive every year.

For today's post, I would like to focus on one entry in particular that while it finished rather well, I find it underrated to me. This entry being Norway's entry from the 2014 contest held in Copenhagen.

From the Wikipedia article, the song ("Silent Storm" by Carl Espen) won Melodi Grand Prix, going on to finish 7th in the semi-final, and finally sealing an 8th place finish in the Grand Final. And if I recall, I ranked it rather high in my 2014 rankings.

The song is incredibly beautiful, taking interpretations in different directions (I see some mental health undertones in this song), and I do think that it deserved the results it got. So, how exactly did it do in the contest?

Looking on Wikipedia, "Silent Storm" did NOT get any 12 points in either the Semi or Grand Final, the highest score coming in the form of 10 points from Finland in the Semi and the Netherlands in the Grand. The lowest was 2 points from Switzerland in the Semi and 3 countries (Austria, Iceland, and Romania) gave the song 1 point in the Grand Final.

But what about the reception? The song was a favorite to win in 2014 and was very well received, even gaining appreciation from 2013 winner Emmelie de Forest (Wikipedia). And at the end, we certainly got a great song that year that runs on emotions.

I watched the trailer and immediately made up a fanfic in my head based on 0.75 seconds in which we were shown the Decepticon high command

To have a face is to have personhood. So by making Bell wear a balaclava, Bell's personhood and identity is denied.

Bell's balaclava therefore serves two purposes. In universe it serves both as a tool to sever the connection between Bell and their former identity and to dehumanize them to the rest of the safe house crew. Getting attached to Bell is dangerous and it's easy to get attached to something with a face. By removing Bell's face from the equation with the Balaclava it becomes easier for Park and Adler to avoid becoming attached to Bell.

Out of universe it allows the player to imagine however they want Bell to look like without having to add actual character model customization to the game.
